overheard this conversation of my colleague on the phone and i thot it was really funny. she was speaking in mandarin so the below passage is a translated version except for the words "toshiba", "ok" and "bye" which remain untranslated.

colleague: just tell him toshiba... yah toshiba... i dunno the chinese name... yah toshiba....toshiba...that person who fixes the tv should know the brand, toshiba right....i really dunno the chinese name...ok...bye.

before my colleague put the phone down, i was about to burst out laughing. then i started to think what's the chinese name for sony? is there one? after she put down the phone, i asked her if she was looking for the chinese name of toshiba.

colleague: yah, my mum is asking what is the chinese name of toshiba. but i really don't know. anyway i'm sure the tv repairman should know toshiba mah. i doubt i can find the chinese name in the dictionary. i was also thinking what is the chinese name for sony. is it "suo ni"? then toshiba must be "duo shi ba"....
